Oscar Pistorius has been sentenced to five years in prison for shooting dead girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp.

Paralympian Oscar, 27, was handed his sentence in Pretoria, South Africa this morning (Tuesday 21 October) by judge Thokozile Masipa.

He was also given a three-year suspended sentence for a firearms offence after killing Reeva in February 2013.

The judge said she considered the sentence to be “fair and just” and that the aim was to “ultimately rehabilitate the accused and allow him time to become a useful member of society”.

Oscar was found guilty of culpable homicide, or negligent killing, in September after he shot Reeva through a locked bathroom door.

He claimed he thought there was an intruder in the house and he killed his girlfriend in error as he believed she was in bed next to him.

The court had spent days deciding on a suitable punishment with the defence arguing that he should be given home arrest and a community order as he was a “broken man” and he had dedicated a large amount of his time to extensive charity work.

It was also argued that the double amputee’s disability would have made him unsuitable for prison but the prosecution wanted him to receive no less than 10 years in jail.
