Kara Tointon has admitted that she and Artem Chigvintsev secretly broke up months ago.

The Eastenders star finally came clean about the end of their three year relationship, which begun when they were partnered in the 2010 series of the ballroom bonanza.

Despite going on to win the show, it appears victory wasn’t in store romance-wise.

Kara told The Telegraph's Mandrake column: "We are not together. We’re fine, but we aren’t a couple any more. The reason I haven’t spoken about it is because I hate reading about myself in that way."

It's not clear exactly when the split happened, but it’s thought to be shortly after last year’s series of Strictly, in which Artem was competing with Corrie actress Natalie Gumede.

Still, the couple can take solace in the thought that they’re not the only ones. Oh no.

One in five of the celeb line-up in last year's show have subsequently suffered a break up, although granted these were from already existing partners rather than those ensnared after a sequinned shimmy.

Rugby player Ben Cohen separated from his wife Abby after taking part and Countdown presenter Rachel Riley split from her husband of 16 months just weeks after leaving the contest. Despite insisting that no one else was involved at the time, she’s now in a suspiciously coincidental relationship with her dance partner Pasha.

This year's not a great year for love either. Casualty actress Sunetra Sarker, who impressed on the weekend with an elegant waltz, has broken up with her husband of 10 years.

As of yet, there's no concrete link between the show and heartache but it's clearly only a matter of time before the BBC explains it all in an episode of Horizon. We'll be glued to the screen.
