If you’re an Emmerdale fan you may want to avert your eyes from this news unless you want them to shed tears – the soap’s biggest female star, Sammy Winward, has quit after 13 years.

As soon as she’d finished filming dramatic scenes for her storyline in which her character Katie Addyman marries Andy Sugden, played by Kevin Fletcher, again, she told bosses she was leaving. A source told The Sun: “Sammy is the Michelle Keegan of Emmerdale so everyone’s gutted she’s leaving.

“She’s hugely popular and her character has been a big part of the show overtaking EastEnders.”

Sammy decided to take a break from the show so she could try her hand at other acting work but is hoping her character is not written out of the soap so she can potentially return.

The source added: “The producers haven’t decided yet. Emmerdale love a big death because it’s great for their ratings.

“She wants to spread her wings and try theatre work and other telly. Emmerdale is virtually everything she has ever known.”

The insider claims Sammy is a bit of a bookworm and history lover and would love to appear in a period drama such as Downton Abbey.

Would she live upstairs or downstairs? Hmmm….
