If there’s one guy we’d like to have around; offering advice when we find ourselves in a tricky situation, it’s that Gandalf fella. He always seems to know the right thing to say, doesn’t he?

So to celebrate the release of the third and final Hobbit film, The Hobbit: The Battle Of The Five Armies, we’ve done some delving and come up with our favourite wise and wonderful Gandalf quotes ever. Enjoy!

gandalf

The world is not in your books and maps, it’s out there – Gandalf

It’s a dangerous business, walking out one’s front door – Gandalf

It does not do to leave a live dragon out of your calculations, if you live near him – Gandalf

The board is set, the pieces are moving. We come to it at last, the great battle of our time – Gandalf

Be silent. Keep your forked tongue behind your teeth. I did not pass through fire and death to bandy crooked words with a witless worm – Gandalf

There is only one Lord of the Ring, only one who can bend it to his will. And he does not share power – Gandalf

Surely you don’t disbelieve the prophecies just because you helped them come about. You don’t really suppose do you that all your adventures and escapes were managed by mere luck? Just for your sole benefit? You’re a very fine person, Mr. Baggins, and I’m quite fond of you. But you are really just a little fellow, in a wide world after all – Gandalf

So what’s the third and final Hobbit film all about then? Well The Hobbit: The Battle Of The Five Armies brings to an epic conclusion the adventures of Bilbo Baggins (Martin Freeman), Thorin Oakenshield (Richard Armitage) and the Company of Dwarves. The Dwarves of Erebor have reclaimed the vast wealth of their homeland, but now must face the consequences of having unleashed the terrifying Dragon, Smaug, upon the defenseless men, women and children of Lake-town.

As he succumbs to dragon-sickness, the King Under the Mountain, Thorin Oakenshield, sacrifices friendship and honor in his search for the legendary Arkenstone. Unable to help Thorin see reason, Bilbo is driven to make a desperate and dangerous choice, not knowing that even greater perils lie ahead. An ancient enemy has returned to Middle-earth. Sauron, the Dark Lord, has sent forth legions of Orcs in a stealth attack upon the Lonely Mountain. As darkness converges on their escalating conflict, the races of Dwarves, Elves and Men must decide – unite or be destroyed. Bilbo finds himself fighting for his life and the lives of his friends as five great armies go to war.
