Cheryl Fernandez-Versini is now happily married to that French bloke of hers, Jean-Bernard Fernandez-Versini, but she almost never was.

Well, almost is a strong word but she could have ended up with David Walliams – had she (and the whole of Girls Aloud) not turned him down. Awks.

The comedian, who recently announced his split from wife Lara Stone, has admitted he once quite fancied Cheryl and asked her former manager Louis Walsh to set them up soon after her band triumphed on Popstars: The Rivals in 2002.

Speaking on The Graham Norton Comic Relief Show, David said: “When Girls Aloud came along I met Louis Walsh and asked him if any of the girls were single and he said he would ask.

“I thought he would do that discreetly, but he called a meeting of all of them and asked, ‘Do any of you want to go out with David Walliams?’ It was a ‘No!’ And that was the end of that.”

Meanwhile, Cheryl has revealed the real reason she got her hair cut into a shorter version of The Rachel – charity.

The singer debuted her new bob earlier this week and she claims she did it to raise money for a good cause.

She said: “I’ve cut it and I’ve dyed it red in aid of Comic Relief.”

The Graham Norton Comic Relief Show is on BBC One and BBC One HD, Friday 6 Martch at 10.35pm.

Comic Relief - Face the Funny is on BBC One, Friday 13 March from 7pm.
