Katie Hopkins has caused controversy yet again on Twitter after making comments about depression following the tragic Germanwings plane crash.

The columnist's comments come after co-pilot Andreas Lubitz, who was believed to have suffered from depression, was suspected of deliberately crashing an Airbus A320 into the Alps and killing everyone onboard.

Hopkins wrote on the social media site: "Sympathy for the co-pilot is making me angry. If you are suicidal, for goodness sake top yourself in private. Attention seeking b******s.

"B****r the co-pilot. We should devote column inches to the pilot desperate to save the life of his screaming passengers. He is the hero."

She then started talking about depression:

"Prescriptions for a anti-depressants have gone up by 400% in America over a 10 yr period. Golly, depression must be catching....

"UK has seen a 500% growth in anti-depressants since 1991. Like being bullied, being depressed is a fashionable thing to be.

"There is no stigma around depression. There are only realists and people p***** off because their train is delayed. 80% of GP's KNOW they are over-prescribing SSRI's (prozac etc). As with ADHD - it is an unnecessary medical solution to a social problem.

"Not everyone is depressed. Not everyone has been bullied. Life is hard sometimes. And the truth can sting. Own your problems."

She ended with: "To be diagnosed as depressed is the holy grail of illnesses for many. The ultimate passport to self obsession. Get a grip people."

Her tweets caused outrage with some users on Twitter. One commented:

"Your privileged life has given you no understanding of the real world, your views on things you don't understand are abhorrent."

While another added: "Actually scares me that some seemingly intelligent people have such narrow minded views, especially when they have a big 'voice' @KTHopkins".
