Madonna believes Radio 1 has banned her music because of her age: ‘It’s so unfair’

Madonna has opened up about Radio 1 not playing her songs anymore because, apparently, she’s too old.

The 56 year old’s single* Living For Love* has been left off the BBC radio station’s playlist, and she believes it’s because of her age.

So how does the Material Girl/woman feel about this?

Madonna told The Sun: “When I heard, I was shocked. I was like, ‘Wait a second. Shouldn’t it be to do with whether you wrote a good, catchy pop song?’

“I thought it was so discriminatory and unfair.

“We’ve made so many advances in other areas — civil rights, gay rights — but ageism is still an area that’s taboo and not talked about and dealt with.”

She added: “My manager said to me, ‘If you’re not in your twenties, it’s hard. You might get your record played in your thirties. There’s a handful of people who do – Pharrell got lucky. But if you’re in your fifties, you can forget it’.

“Really? Is that how it’s broken down? I’m so stupid. I didn’t know it was anything to do with my age. I just do my work.”

The BBC claims its selections have nothing to do with age.

A BBC spokesman said: “Radio 1 does not ever ban artists.

“Tracks are chosen on musical merit and their relevance to our young audience on a case-by-case basis and while around 40 per cent of the country’s 15 to 29-year-olds tune in to Radio 1 each week, an artist’s age is never a factor.”
