Families on low income salaries are given food stamps worth $29 a week and to help raise awareness, and some cash, for the NYC Food Bank, Gwyneth gave it a shot.

Packing her basket with limes, frozen peas and a tomato (among other things) she started the challenge but came under fire when she was pictured outside a posh restaurant in Beverly Hills yesterday.

At the time, her rep explained: “She already finished the challenge last week…” but now Gwynnie has admitted she gave up after four days. Oo-er.

She wrote on Goop: “As I suspected, we only made it through about four days, when I personally broke and had some chicken and fresh vegetables (and in full transparency, half a bag of black liquorice).” You devil, Gwyn.

On the site, she explained she was “dubious” she manage the whole challenge (maybe tell your rep you failed, Gwyn) but kindly gave a donation to a food bank at the start.

Using her power for good, the mum-of-two used her experience to highlight the plight of low income families in the US, adding: “My perspective has been forever altered by how difficult it was to eat wholesome, nutritious food on that budget, even for just a few days—a challenge that 47 million Americans face every day, week, and year.

“After this week, I am even more grateful that I am able to provide high-quality food for my kids.”
