You know the way Tom Hanks’ lip syncing in Carly Rae Jepsen’s I Really Like You video, by all intents and purposes, is a bit shonky? Despite being an Oscar-winning and highly professional actor, he really doesn’t know the words.

Here is what we are talking about:

But you know what? It’s supposed to be like that because a) Tom Hanks can do whatever the damn well he likes and b) Carly Rae Jepsen told us so when we had a phone conversation with her earlier this month.

“What we all loved about the video is that he kind of purposely misses half of them, like a botched attempt at lip syncing,” Carly Rae Jepsen told us when we asked about Tom’s questionable mastery of the lyrics to I Really Like You. “He kind of knows them but he doesn’t. He’ll hit a word with gusto and make up for all the other ones he misses.”
