We always knew Nick Grimshaw was pretty great but now he’s even better in our eyes – the BBC Radio 1 DJ has become BFFs with Simon Cowell after the X Factor boss’s mother passed away.

Simon’s beloved mum Julie died earlier this month and the music mogul took some time off from filming the show after he was left devastated by the news.

But nice guy Nick, who joined the talent contest as a judge this year, has apparently been Simon’s shoulder to lean on when things get a bit too much at work and they are now inseparable.

Fellow panellist Cheryl Fernandez-Versini told the Daily Star Sunday: “Nick and Simon are the new David [Walliams] and Simon. They are like two big kids.

“I think David needs to watch out because Simon has a new boyfriend.”

Simon is said to like the fact Nick makes the atmosphere light-hearted at the auditions and it has helped with the fact he initially regretted axing former judge Louis Walsh.

Nick said: “Me and Simon love each other. David is out and I’m in.

“I think we upped it to a new level this week because we wound Cheryl up something rotten. I love her but she is so easy to wind up and she can’t help but react. We were both making cat noises at about 11.30pm and driving her insane.

“You can’t control Simon. He just wants to have fun and wind people up – mainly Cheryl.”

On his new job, Nick added: “It is a lot more fun than I expected it to be. I thought it would be really hard work but we have such a laugh – even though I’m getting three hours’ sleep a night.”

Keep up the bantz, guys!

Cheryl's Adam Lippes tuxedo dress may cost over £1k, but that's nothing compared to a lifetime of dry cleaning bills. Just beware of Nando's, eh Chez?

Poor Rita must've accidentally got stuck in a door or been attacked by a pack of dogs on the way to the auditions. We can think of no other possible explanation for that missing sleeve
