Simon Cowell has defended Cheryl Fernandez-Versini's weight loss, explaining that his fellow X Factor judge is "not someone who’s trying to make herself thin."

Speaking to The Sun, Simon said: “I don’t think it’s necessarily been criticism, I think it’s been concern.”

The music mogul wasn't concerned as he knows Cheryl "so well” and thinks the weight loss was down to her being ill.

“This is not someone who’s trying to make herself thin. I think she did pick up a bug", he said.

“And I think the way she’s approaching what was addressed about her weight in a very open way — by saying she is thin and is trying to put on weight — is great. I don’t think she would have done that two years ago.”

Simon also told the paper about how he tested her appetite, as he and Cheryl went on the hunt for burgers as soon as they got to Manchester for the X Factor auditions. Although, they really fancied Wimpy and struggled to find one - turns out there's only 93 left in the UK!

“The first thing I did when I went to Manchester with her was eat. For some reason, we wanted a Wimpy rather than a McDonald’s.

“We couldn’t find one in the end but we found another burger shop and she had the same as me.”

Finally, Simon slammed the claims that he had sacked Cheryl from the US version of The X Factor for her weight gain.

He said: “All I want for her is to be healthy. My concern when she was working with me in America was nothing about her weight. She just wasn’t herself.

“And she admits that now. She was in the wrong headspace.”
