Liam Payne has broken his silence on the news that Louis Tomlinson is having a baby with Brianna Jungwirth.

The 21-year-old One Direction star admitted he was "shocked" when he heard the news, and explained how Louis is coping with the prospect of being a dad.

Speaking to Jo Parkerson on Magic FM, Liam said: "I was obviously a bit shocked, but he’s taken super well to it. He’s very excited about what’s going on.

"Sometimes stuff happens like that, not to make it sound like a small deal – he’s taking it very seriously… I know that’s quite a crazy thought [having a baby].

"All I know… I want to have kids when I’ve got time for it. Life is so busy and I wouldn’t want to commit when I don’t have time for it. For me – I’m the dad of One Direction – I plan life carefully."

And good news, when asked what the mother of Louis' child is like, Liam said: "She’s lovely, she’s a lovely girl."

Liam then began to speak about how the band has coped since Zayn Malik quit the band back in March.

"It’s always going to be a different vibe on stage, but you know it is quite nice in a sense, with no disrespect, it’s been quite fun.

"Losing somebody is always going to bring people closer together and it’s nice to see how things are at the moment. It really is great.

"There’s no hard feelings there – we wish him luck with his record deal and we saw the tweet he sent to us which was super nice – it’s all good. No, I haven’t spoken to him recently, he’s off doing his thing and he’s taking his time.

"It’s a different thing to leave behind, such a great opportunity, but his heart wasn’t in it and you have to go with your heart. It’s fine."

When asked how he felt about Zayn tweeting #RealMusic and #RealMe when he announced his signing for his solo career with RCA, Liam said: "No, I don’t think he meant it in that way. I hope he didn't mean it in that way anyway."

He continued: "I haven't spoken to [Zayn] recently and he's off doing his own thing and taking his time. It is a difficult thing to leave the band, but his heart wasn't in it and you have to go with your heart and say, 'I can't do this anymore and there is something out there that I do want to do that is different'... and that's fine.

"I'm dead excited to hear some of his stuff. I did a lot of work with him in the studio when he was in the band. We used to stay up late and do rap stuff which is quite interesting... because I like to produce rap beats and stuff. He's got a great voice and he's a very talented young man, and we wish him all the best of luck."
