Indiana couple Bill Devaney and Breanne Clark have been together for seven years, so it’s no surprise their families were expecting an engagement to happen soon.

But no one ever thought it would turn out like this…

In an exclusive interview with heat, Bill, 32, tells us: “Breanne’s mum’s been bugging me for years to propose, so it [the proposal] was a Mothers’ Day surprise to rub it in her face. We got to the beach and her mum is frantic, everybody was cold, we were trying to get a family photo done and get to the restaurant.”

But just as they started to get in position to take the family picture, Breanne’s mum Eva, unaware of the imminent proposal, was also unaware of the huge rock poking out of the sand.

Bill says: “When she hit the ground everybody started laughing and she started snorting with laughter so we all knew she was okay. I had already pulled the ring out of my pocket so when her mum fell I really had no other option but to go ahead and go for it.”

And poor old Breanne’s mum was on the floor for around a minute.

“She was laughing so hard she was afraid she was going to pee her pants if she got up so she stayed down there with her face in the sand” Bill added.

To add to the distractions, just as Bill went down on one knee Breanne’s mum and dad start having a disagreement. “Her dad is always on edge” Bill tells us. “If things aren’t going right he’s going to let everyone know and that’s what went down.”

But, one thing did go right for Bill – Breanne wasn’t expecting a thing when they turned up at rock pier, in Lake Michigan, where they had their first date in 2008.

Breanne, 28, tells us: “Mum falling, in terms of distraction it couldn’t have worked any better. My mum was worried she’d stolen the limelight, but it was totally fine.” “I was extremely happy that she said yes,” Bill added.
