Buckingham Palace was yesterday rendered a far less stuffy tourist attraction than usual after Rowan Atkinson turned the site into a celebration of 25 years of his classic show.

The comic recreated one of his funniest sketches, which involves him endeavouring to drive his olive green Mini while sat on top of an armchair and steering the wheel with a mop and a precarious system of pullies.

Rowan/Mr Bean started his celebratory journey at the capital’s St James’s Park, taking a selfie next to the London Eye and indulging in an ice cream. A formidable looking police escort – presumably provided to ensure Beany didn’t get up to his usual antics – then escorted him to the palace, where he was received by a large group of eager fans.

The event marked 25 years since the hugely successful show was first aired on British television.

A cartoon inspired by the series and featuring Rowan Atkinson starts today on Boomerang. Watch a video of the original scene below.
