Simon Cowell has taken to Twitter to apologise for his potty-mouthed outburst on last night’s X Factor.

On hearing that he would be mentoring the Overs category during last night’s episode, Simon exclaimed: “Oh, for f**k’s sake – are you winding me up?”

Bit harsh…

The big boss even double-checked the results with hosts Caroline Flack and Olly Murs, saying: "Are you sure this is the right name in there? Can I have a look?"

But he obviously felt bad about his mean reaction, as he tweeted: "Sorry for swearing on the show tonight. It's not big and it's not clever."

As well as his groveling apology, Simon also took the opportunity to comment on Rita Ora’s choices during her Girls’ Six Chair Challenge.

"Wish Karen Mav had kept a seat," he added, referring to Rita’s difficult decision to swap the singer for fellow contestant Kiera Weathers.

Watch the next episode of The X Factor on Sunday at 7pm on ITV.

Fresh from crowning Max and Jess winners of Love Island Caz Flack got her (very good) legs out in a leather mini and hipster Bella Freud knit. We love this hair style on Flack, so fun.

A loud Versace mini with sequins and pointy stilettos gave Rita a totally 80s feel. That sleek high pony works, too.
