Olly Murs’ MUM hits out at The X Factor host after Monica Michael gaffe

You could tell Olly Murs was beating himself up the moment he realised he’d mistakenly revealed Monica Michael had been given the boot from The X Factor too early.

But not only did the show host receive criticism from viewers, his MUM gave him a right telling off after seeing the blunder on television.

Olly, who presents the show alongside Caroline Flack, received a phone call from his mother, who called him a “plonker”.

Former X Factor contestant Olly stumbled over his words earlier this month and told Monica she had been voted off the show when they were actually going to deadlock so the judges – Simon Cowell, Cheryl Fernandez-Versini, Rita Ora and Nick Grimshaw – could vote on who they thought should leave.

Olly told Daily Mail Weekend: “It was a pivotal moment and I just got confused about what was happening next.

“I said the wrong words to Simon and I just lost the plot and said, ‘OK Monica, I’m so sad to see you go,’ when I should have said, ‘We’re going to deadlock.’

“In my earpiece I was being told by the production team I’d made a mistake – but they didn’t say what the mistake was.

“I was completely, what’s the word, confused.”

Olly’s mum called him soon after to give him a scolding but quickly became protective of her son when she realised just how unimpressed the viewing public were.

“She said, ‘You plonker. What were you thinking?’ But then the whole storm blew up, she became quite defensive of me,” he continued.

“I mean, the reaction was a bit much.”

Olly tweeted an apology after the show and received some support from fans and also got a message from former host Dermot O’Leary.

He wrote: “Hey @ollyofficial Ahoy my friend. Keep that head up. Happens to us all. X”

His co-presenter Caroline Flack added: “We all make mistakes. I make LOADS in life and on telly... It’s live.”

Don’t worry, Olly. It’s all in the past now...
