Fans of Olly Murs,* The X Factor* and plain good sesnse have shown outrage at former contestant Steve Brookstein for his tasteless joke about Olly Murs' gaffe.

Last night, Olly messed up on the live show.

After the judges claimed they couldn't decide which act to send home - Monica Michael or Anton Stephans - the decision was supposed to be annouced as in deadlock.

However, Olly told Monica that she had been eliminated before being given the envelope with the results.

Come on, he must have known who had the least votes. And who hasn't made a mistake live on TV? Other than Dermot O'Leary.

Anyway, some people have got their knickers in a twist about Olly's mistake but Steve, who won the first series of The X Factor in 2004, saw it as an opportunity for a joke about HIV.

Twitter users have hit back at Steve's very poor taste remark but so far he's shown zero remorse, even claiming that if he'd swapped HIV for Ebola then people wouldn't have had a problem with the "quip".

In 2014, Steve released an autobiography Getting Over The X detailing how the press and music industry have turned their back on him.

His latest album, Forgotten Man, was released the same year.

So far as we can tell, it failed to chart.
