What Rossy said to make Awards audience gasp...

Jonathan Ross

heat is always excited to go to a big awards event, and the Comedy Awards were as fun as ever last night. AND we got to sit next to Jonathan Ross' lovely mother! But one key fact made them even weirder and more interesting than usual – they weren't on TV! So we feel we must try to give you a flavour of the highlights since ITV decided you shouldn't get the chance to see them for yourself. Best bit for us was the Special Achievement Award given to the wondrous Stephen Fry, who delivered a lovely speech via satellite from Florida, clad in skimpy denim shorts! Even better was the thrill of seeing JK Rowling on stage with Jonathan Ross, presenting Fry's award. Ross cheekily asked her to sign a book for him, not one of her own Harry Potter ones but a tome by rival kiddie author Philip Pullman! She gamely played along.

Ross was in scathing form throughout, slagging off the powers that be at ITV ("it's run by liars and thieves" he joked), and singling out The Peter Serafinowicz Show and Tittybangbang for harsh treatment. He also had some slightly uncomfortable moments chatting to some of the award-givers, especially a rather humorless Gillian Anderson from out of The X Files. Hey Gillian, it's the COMEDY awards, remember! His gag about the injustice of Chris Langham being allowed out, but not the Comedy Awards drew gasps from the audience.

As for the big winners, well Gavin & Stacey rightly won loads, and stars James Corden and Ruth Jones were visibly thrilled. Although they did forget to thank the actors who actually play Gavin and Stacey!

The big shock of the night for us was the brilliant Friday Night Project being beaten in two categories by Never MInd The Buzzcocks. Great show and everything, but it IS just a panel game. Justin and Alan got one of the biggest cheers of the night when their names were read out, while Buzzcocks host Simon Amstell berated heat for not giving his show five stars!

Finally, the oddest thing of all was that they filmed the whole show as if it was live, complete with commercial breaks, and they even cut short some of the nominees' clips because "the show was over-running" even though it wasn't even being shown on TV! Most peculiar. They also kept saying it might be on TV one day. But we've seen the ITV schedules right up to the New Year and there's no sign of it... Come on ITV, get your act together!
