It’s a boon for singer-songwriters this year, for some reason, with the announcement of the line-up for the Cannes Film Festival, which runs 16-27 May. Opening-night film My Blueberry Nights, from hip Hong Kong director Wong Kar-wai, features major stars such as Jude Law, Natalie Portman and Rachel Weisz, but it’s jazzy vocalist Norah Jones who has the lead role in the offbeat road movie. The closing-night film is The Age Of Darkness, from Canada’s Denys Arcand – stars such as Diane Kruger (Troy) are joined by singer Rufus Wainwright. Highlights of the line-up include new films from the Coen brothers (No Country For Old Men), Gus Van Sant (Paranoid Park) and documentary superstar Michael Moore (Sicko). Both Brad and Ange will be there: he’s got Ocean’s Thirteen, and she has A Mighty Heart, in which she plays real-life figure Mariane Pearl, widow of murdered journalist Daniel Pearl. Quentin Tarantino’s Death Proof, which flopped in the US as part of a double feature called Grindhouse, will stand alone in Cannes in a special extended version.
