Crinkly Hollywood heartthrob Richard Gere has been cleared of obscenity following his public puckering up with Bollywood actress Shilpa Shetty. The actor caused an outcry in India when he planted a smacker on the Celebrity Big Brother winner at an AIDS awareness rally in April last year. Calls were made for him to be arrested, as the affectionate exchange had flouted the country’s strict anti-obscenity laws. Shilpa herself also got into hot water over the kiss, even though, to be fair to her, she didn’t seem to have much choice in the matter. Gere, who initially dismissed the row as “nothing”, later apologised for causing offence. India’s Supreme Court has now thrown out the legal case against him, and a judge confirmed, “Richard Gere is free to enter the country. This is the end of the matter.”
