Hollyoaks star gets involved in political row with anti-gay MP

The stars of Hollyoaks are more famous for their flawless looks and slightly OTT acting than they are for their political views – but now Gerard McCarthy, who plays irritating cross-dressing student Kris in the hangover soap, has called for a Northern Irish MP to resign after she made shocking anti-gay comments. Somewhat bafflingly, Iris Robinson was quoted as saying that homosexuality was “comparable” to child abuse, but later back-tracked saying “I clearly intended to say that child abuse was worse even than homosexuality and sodomy.” Worse even? Jeez. Now Gerard has boldly stepped in, saying her description was “an abomination” and “simply unacceptable in a modern democracy.” Get him with his big words! He added that Iris Robinson was “helping to destroy the lives of young people struggling to come to terms with their sexuality” and said that her “hateful and extremist opinion” was a violation of the MPs’ Code of Conduct. Wow, good on him for getting involved. Who said that Hollyoaks lot were vacuous and shallow, eh?
