Last Friday, Adulthood, sequel to British urban youth flick Kidulthood, opened at UK cinemas. On Saturday morning, the box-office figures started rolling into the BlackBerrys of every film executive in the UK: not only had the low-budget film beaten rival new releases like The Ruins and Teeth, its Friday takings were also higher than the box-office that day for Hollywood blockbusters such as The Incredible Hulk and Sex And The City. Yep, Adulthood was the Number One film in the market. Although those other big films – playing on over three times as many screens – did overtake Adulthood over the course of the weekend, it’s still an amazing result for writer-director-star Noel Clarke, aka Mickey from Doctor Who. As of this morning (four days’ takings), Adulthood has grossed £1.365million, which was more than triple what Kidulthood managed during its entire theatrical run. Congratulations, Noel!
