Biography

dele was brought up in Tottenham and then South London by her single mum who was a furniture-maker. She was selected to study at the BRIT School, where fellow future pop sensations Leona Lewis and Jessie J were her classmates.

After graduating, Adele saw herself as more of an A&R type than an actual performer. But on the basis of a friend posting one of her demo’s on Myspace, Adele was signed up to XL Recordings.

Her breakthrough hit came with the single Chasing Pavements, which went straight to number 2 in the UK. Adele’s debut album, 19, went straight to number 1 in the UK and her next move was to try and break America, a notoriously tough crowd.

After her album fell flat Stateside, Adele was due to play Saturday Night Live on US TV. Sarah Palin was tipped to appear on the show, prompting viewing figures to jump to 17 million viewers. The day after Adele’s performance on the show, 19 had topped the iTunes album chart, earning her 2 Grammy awards too. So in a roundabout way, she has Sarah Palin to thank for her phenomenal US success!
