Biography

Born in Wales in July 1974, our favourite gladiator Andy studied at the University of Sheffield and went on to work as an engineer in London. Body AND brains. He relocated to Sydney, Australia in 1999 and studied at the Screenwise Film & TV School for Actors there.

After graduating from the performing arts school he went on to star in several Aussie TV series, including The Strip and McLeod’s Daughters. It was after starring in hit Aussie flick Gabriel that Andy got his big break, heading the cast of the sword, sandals, and sex epic TV series Spartacus: Blood and Sand. He played the lead role of Spartacus, rebelling against the Romans in what is simply the sauciest gladiatorial spectacle to ever hit our screens.

During filming in March 2010, Andy was diagnosed with non-Hodgkin lymphoma. While he received treatment in New Zealand, producers decided to shoot a prequel to Spartacus rather than a second series. Andy's treatment forced him to pull out of the Spartacus franchise, being replaced by Liam MacIntyre.

On 11 September 2011 Andy passed away surrounded by his family. He was a fighter till the end.

Andy had been married twice. His first marriage was to Terrica Smith lasted from 1999 to 2003. He married to Vashti Whitfield, and lived in Australia with their two children.
