Biography

Former Libertine Carl was born into a bohemian family, his dad an artist, and spent part of his childhood living in a hippy commune in Somerset. While studying for a drama degree that he never completed at Brunel University’s Twickenham campus, he befriended Pete Doherty’s sister, and eventually Pete.

The pair formed The Libertines in the late 90’s and their debut Up the Bracket was a ramshackle indie sensation. Their follow-up album debuted at number 1 and they notched up four Top 20 singles. Their success was drastically halted by Pete’s heavy heroine addiction and he was jailed in 2003 for burgling Carl’s flat.

In 2005, Carl formed Dirty Pretty Things and had some chart success, with their debut single getting to number 5 and their debut album reaching number 3. When their third album failed to chart, the band split in 2008. His 2010 debut solo album limped into the charts at number 52.

Carl’s since embarked on a career as an actor, starring as Gene Vincent in the 2008 Joe Meek biopic Telstar. In 2010 he appeared opposite Sadie Frost in the stage play Fool For Love, which was utterly panned.

In 2008, Carl split with his long-term girlfriend, TV presenter Annalisa Astarita. He now lives with girlfriend Edie Langley and the couple had a son, Eli, in December 2010.
