Biography:
Most famous for her BBC2 comedy sketch, The Catherine Tate Show, this actress, writer and comedian has worked her way up in the showbiz world to get where she is today.
Catherine Tate, born Catherine Ford, was born in London and raised by her mother and grandmother. It’s reported that she suffered from obsessive-compulsive disorder as a child – centred on word association.
Catherine had her mind set on being an actress since she was 16, and tried for four years to get a place in Central School of Speech and Drama, where she later graduated from. Prior to this she went to the Sylvia Young Theatre School but left after a week as the girls were too competitive for her!
She spent a year with the Royal Shakespeare Company before she turned to comedy.
In 2004, shortly after being approached by Geoffery Perkins, BBC controller of comedy, she was given The Catherine Tate Show which after its first series won a British Comedy Award for Best British Newcomer.
Her character of ‘Lauren Cooper’ – a teenager full of attitude – became one of the most well-known characters in British comedy, with her catchphrase ‘bovvered’ being considered for entry into the Oxford English dictionary after the third series of the show.
Tate also played Donna Noble in the fourth series of Doctor Who.
The comedian split from her long-term partner, Twig Clark, earlier this year and is now reportedly dating Take That star, Jason Orange.
Despite being well known as a funny-woman, Tate has a serious side and is the patron for the Laura Crane youth cancer trust.
Famous fans include Paul O’Grady, Ricky Gervais, Peter Kay and Dawn French who reportedly said after meeting her at Edinburgh Festival, “Catherine Tate is far too talented and she must be destroyed."
