Biography

One of Hollywood’s hottest young stars, Emile was born in the bohemian community of Topanga Canyon, California where his mum is an artist. After enrolling at the Will Geer Theatricum, a summer drama camp in Topanga, he joined the Academy of Music at Alexander Hamilton High School in LA. He then dropped out half way through his senior year to concentrate on his acting career.

Emile began acting at the age of 8 with minor roles on television shows like NYPD Blue, ER and Sabrina the Teenage Witch. His feature film debut came in 2002 in the Jodie Foster drama, The Dangerous Lives of Altar Boys. In 2004 he was cast in the teen comedy flick The Girl Next Door and became an instant teen idol.

He racked up some serious street cred in 2005 with roles alongside Heath Ledger in skateboarding biopic Lords of Dogtown and in the cult drama Alpha Dog alongside Justin Timberlake and Bruce Willis in 2007.

His breakthrough role in Sean Penn’s acclaimed Into the Wild came the same year. His first leading role, Emile won a Screen Actors Guild nomination for his performance. He’s since starred with Penn again in the critically lauded Gus Van Sant biopic Milk, playing the prominent role of gay rights activist Cleve Jones.

Set to star in the new Oliver Stone drug movie Savages alongside John Travolta, Emile has been dating Juno star Ellen Page since 2010.
