Biography
Eminem endured a tough childhood before he took the world by storm with his controversial but groundbreaking form of hip hop. His father left the scene when he was just 18 months old, leaving his mum alone to take care of him. They moved around a lot, settling in Detroit during his teens. He struggled with school, repeating the 9th grade twice, before dropping out altogether at 17.
The Beastie Boys turned Eminem on to hip hop and he released his first EP with Bassmint at the age of 18. It wasn’t easy gaining acceptance as a white rapper, but he persevered with the freestyle battles until he was picked up by Interscope Records after placing second in the 1997 Rap Olympics.
Introduced to Dr. Dre, the two hit it off and began recording his major-label debut The Slim Shady LP in 1999, which went triple-platinum that year. Five multi-million selling albums followed, along with 13 Grammy’s, and a whole load of controversy over his extreme horrorcore lyrics. His success bought him his own label, Shady Records, where he signed D12, Stat Quo and DJ Green Lantern amongst others.
Eminem then branched out into acting, winning serious praise with the critically acclaimed 8 Mile. He published an autobiography, The Way I Am in 2008, and set up his own charity, The Marshall Mathers Foundation, which helps impoverished kids in his home state of Michigan.
