Biography

One of the biggest-selling singers in the world, one-time Wham! man George was born in East Finchley, London. He grew up in North London with his dad, a Greek Cypriot restaurant owner, and his mum, a dancer. While he was studying at Bushey Meads School he befriended one Andrew Ridgeley. The two shared a passion for music and would later go on to change the face of pop.

George started his musical career as a DJ, working the clubs around North London. After a brief stint in a ska band, he formed Wham! with Andrew Ridgeley in 1981. Their debut album went straight to number one, and a new pop phenomenon was born.

George released his first solo effort, the chart-topping Careless Whisper, at the height of Wham! fame in 1984. He's since gone on to sell more than 100 million records worldwide with hits like Faith, Jesus as a Child and Amazing.

In 1998, George was arrested for "engaging in a lewd act" in an LA public toilet. He famously sent-up the incident with his tongue-in-cheek video for hit single Outside. More recently, he's been caught cruising for anonymous sex on Hampstead Heath, been arrested on Class A and C drugs charges, admitted to a serious cannabis problem, crashed his car into a branch of Snappy Snaps in 2010, and served four weeks in prison.

In May 2011, he announced his next comeback, with a forthcoming European tour beginning in August 2011.
