One of the founding members of bootylicious girl group Destiny’s Child, Kelly had a tough upbringing in Atlanta, where her mum left her dad due to his abusive and drunken behaviour. She moved to Houston in Texas when she was 8 years old where she befriended Beyonce Knowles. The two girls joined a local R&B girl group called Girl Tyme and they took part in TV talent show Star Search. They lost.

But this set back wasn’t enough to put the girls off their dream, and after constant rehearsals in Beyonce’s mum’s hair salon, name changes-a-plenty and more alterations to their line up than you can shake a stick at, Destiny’s Child emerged as a three piece featuring Kelly, Beyonce and Michelle Williams. They would go on to become the top-selling female recording group of all-time.

And Kelly would soon become a best-selling Grammy-winning solo artist in her own right after. Her debut album, Simply Deep, was a global smash when it was released in 2002, and the album’s hit single Dilemma featuring Nelly topped the charts and won Kelly her first Grammy.

Following Destiny’s Child split (sob!) in 2005, Kelly has released two further solo albums, Ms. Kelly in 2007, and more recently Here I am in July 2011. Along the way she scored a massive hit teaming up with French DJ David Guette on the global smash hit When Love Takes Over, and has dabbled in TV and film acting.
