Biography
Computer-whizz, Facebook co-creator and the man who values his own privacy much more than he values yours, Mark was born in New York. A gifted student, excelled and science and maths, loved Classics, and was the star of his high school fencing team. Yes. His school had a fencing team.
Mark began using computers and writing software as a child after his dad taught him Atari BASIC Programming. He was tutored privately in computer programming as a teen, with his tutor calling him a “prodigy”.
Going on to study Psychology and Computer Science at Harvard in 2002, he’d already created a primitive kind of IM and a music player that learned users’ listening habits by the time he launched Facebook from his dorm room in February 2004. He co-founded it as a private company with three of his classmates, and it soon spread to other universities and schools.
By 2010 Facebook had reached the 500 million-user mark. Now with over 750 million active users, Mark Zuckerberg is an entrepreneurial legend and international star. Facebook is now valued at an astounding $50 billion, but Mark still refuses to sell the company - there aren’t many people on this planet who would say no to $50 billion.
The Information Age’s number 1 star, a film loosely based on his life, The Social Network, became an Oscar-nominated smash in 2010. He’s since popped up in The Simpsons, Saturday Night Live, and has pledged to donate at least half of his wealth to charity.
