Biography
The world’s foremost purveyor of songs about black holes and neutron star collisions, Matt started playing the piano at age 6 and guitar when he was 14. He may have had some help from his dad, a guitarist with the hit 60’s group The Tornados, who became the first band in history to top both the UK and US charts simultaneously with their smash hit Telstar.
Matt formed Muse while still at school in Teignmouth, Devon in 1994, originally called Rocket Baby Dolls. After a long slog touring and building up a fan base, Muse are now international superstars, with 3 of their 5 studio albums topping the UK charts. To date, Matt’s group have released 14 Top 20 singles, their biggest hit, Supermassive Black Hole, got to number 4.
As well as being named one of the greatest guitarists of all time, he’s become a bit of a pin-up, with Cosmo voting him the Sexiest Rocker of 2003 and 2004, winning NME’s Sexiest Male in 2007, 2009, 2010 and 2011. He’s now a playable character in Guitar Hero 5 and has written music for the Twilight movie franchise.
Matt began dating actress Kate Hudson in 2010 and the couple become engaged in 2011. Their son, Bingham 'Bing' Hawn, was born in July 2011.
