Biography:
Little Britain star and British cult comedy legend Matt was born into a Jewish family in London, going to the same boys’ school as Sacha Baron Cohen and David Baddiel. He studied at the National Youth Theatre where he met future comedy BFF David Walliams and the two then studied drama together at Bristol University.
Making a name for himself on the comedy circuit, Matt struck up a friendship with British comedy legends Vic and Bob. He’s since appeared in almost everything they’ve ever produced, from The Smell of Reeves and Mortimer in 1992 through to his role as loudmouth adult-baby drummer George Dawes in Shooting Stars, where he sang beautifully about lesbians and peanuts.
Matt teamed up with David Walliams in 1999 for their cult hit Rock Profile series, going on to write and star in the smash hit sketch show series Little Britain from 2003. Live tours, one-off specials and a US version followed and the pair became household names. Their follow up series Come Fly With Me debuted in 2010.
Matt has since taken to the stage in Boy George’s musical Taboo and in the West End’s Les Miserables, popping up in Tim Burton’s Alice in Wonderland, and he’s set to star alongside Johnny Knoxville and the legendary James Caan in the Hollywood comedy Small Apartments.
In 2006 Matt tied the knot in a civil partnership with Kevin McGee. They divorced after six years together, with troubled Kevin committing suicide 10 months later.
