Biography
Canadian Frank Sinatra wannabe Michael was born in Burnaby, British Columbia. He was a kid with two obsessions – ice hockey, and jazz. Ice hockey he wasn’t so hot at, but singing, he could do. He and his Italian grandfather shared a love of jazz and his grandfather paid for Michael’s singing lessons and helped to book him gigs.
Starting out singing in nightclubs from the age of 16, Michael played every gig going, including a stint as a singing Santa Claus, and was all set to give up on his dream until he struck gold in 2000. Singing at a wedding, he was introduced to Canadian music mogul David Foster and the meeting resulted in a recording contract. That same year he appeared with Gwyneth Paltrow in the movie Duets.
He has since gone on to international fame, releasing four multi-platinum-selling studio albums. Now the official king of the swingers, his smooth covers of jazz standards have earned him three Grammy’s and more than 35 million record sales.
Michael was engaged to his stage actress girlfriend Debbie Timuss after dating for years, but the couple split in 2005. He went on to date Brit actress Emily Blunt for three years, penning the song Everything for her. Then Michael met Argentine model and actress Luisana Lopilato in 2008 and the two secretly wed in Buenos Aires in March 2011. Cue the tears of heartbroken mothers everywhere.
