X Factor 2010 Runner-Up Rebecca Ferguson is a 24-year-old single mother of two – Lillie May, six, and Karl, four – from Anfield, Liverpool. She was initially described during the early weeks of the show in the press as ‘the scouse mouth’ and more unkindly as ‘the voice of an angel, the personality of a wet fish’, but Rebecca kept her head down and gained in popularity during the series.
A qualified legal secretary, Rebecca Ferguson had studied at Hugh Baird College and virtually given up on a career in music when she won a place in front of the judges.
Like some of the other contestants, Rebecca had applied to the X Factor before but had been turned down. She had also been turned down for a part in P. Diddy’s Starmaker in New York.
She impressed the judges at her initial audition when she sang A Change Is Gonna Come. She sailed through bootcamp and sang Fireflies for Cheryl Cole at the judges house. She was Cheryl Cole’s least controversial choice of act, being joined by Katie Waissel, Cher Lloyd and eventually, Treyc Cohen in the Girls category.
At the X Factor final she looked completely starstruck walking onto stage with Christina Aguilera to sing her hit single Beautiful, but pulled off a fantastic performance.
She performed a separate ‘winners’ song to Matt Cardle. If Rebecca Ferguson had won X Factor then she would have released a cover version of Duffy’s Distant Dreamer.
Louis Walsh, with no acts left in the competition, was noticeably keen for Rebecca Ferguson to win the X Factor. What was that all about Louis?!
