Biography
With more words than a dictionary, Russell’s humble beginnings discussing his ‘ball bags’ on Big Brother’s Big Mouth firmly established him as one of Britian’s brightest stars in comedy.
However, Russell’s rise to fame was not without struggle. Russell’s early career was hindered by drug addiction. In his acclaimed autobiography My Booky Wook, Russell describes the time he introduced his drug dealer to Kylie Minogue. Russell has since kicked his addictions and gone on to a successful career as a presenter and stand up comic.
Disaster struck in 2008 when Russell’s mischievous side got the better of him with the ill fated choice to leave rude messages on Andrew Sachs answer machine during his Radio 2 show. Sachsgate provoked nearly 40,000 complaints, eclipsed news of the US election and even the prime minister commented on it – FYI he reckoned it was ‘clearly inappropriate’. The incident led to Russell’s resignation from the BBC.
Since then Russell has become one of the UK’s finest exports, starring in Hollywood films such as Forgetting Sarah Marshall and Get him to the Greek. However, America hasn’t always been so impressed with our Russ. Back in 2008, MTV asked a little known British comedian, Russell Brand, to host their annual Video Music Awards. We doubt they expected comments like this – Russell referred to then president George Bush as a ‘retarded cowboy fella’ and poked fun at The Jonas Brothers which is a bit like poking fun at royalty in America.
Russell’s other claim to fame? Well, there was a time when we would have been offended if we were in a room and Russell didn’t come on to us but it seems his philandering days are over. Despite a track record with the ladies that would make even Ron Jeremy blush Russell has finally found monogamous bliss with a certain Katy Perry. The couple married in a Hindu ceremony in India in 2010.
