Biography
Pint-sized couch-jumping Scientology fanatic Tom had a hard time at home as a child. Growing up in near poverty, he suffered at the hands of his abusive father. Attending 15 schools in 12 years, he began acting as a means of escape.
1983 was Tom’s breakthrough year when he was cast in Francis Ford Coppola’s bratpack-packed The Outsiders, and the so-80’s-it-hurts classic that launched him to superstardom, Risky Business. Then came 1986’s Top Gun, which cemented his position as the top dog in Hollywood.
Tom has continued to play heroic leads ever since, appearing in the hugely successful Mission Impossible franchise, branching out into weirder fare to broaden his scope and appeal, with films like Eyes Wide Shut, Magnolia, and Vanilla Sky in 2001.
Now one of the most successful movie stars of all time, Tom is also a powerful player behind the scenes, running his own production company and taking charge of United Artists film studios.
He’s famously the most prominent member of the rather mysterious and more than slightly wacko Church of Scientology having been introduced to the religion by first wife Mimi Rogers. After Mimi came his marriage to Days of Thunder co-star Nicole Kidman from 1990 to 2001, the couple adopting two children. He dated another co-star, Penelope Cruz before meeting Katie Holmes and expressing his love for her through the medium of interpretative couch-jumping on the Oprah Winfrey Show in 2005. TomKat wed in November 2006, seven months after having their first daughter, Suri.
