Dazzle Don't Frazzle! Join our campaign here

You only have to look at photos like these to realise too much sun can do bad things to your looks, but there are still a worrying number of us who bake ourselves on sunbeds far too regularly. Even more worryingly, the age at which we're all started to use sunbeds is dropping lower all the time, with children as young as ten or 11 hopping on the sunbeds to get a tan. Nicola Roberts has told heat in an exclusive interview (out in today's brand new mag) that her obsession with tanning did a lot of damage to her naturally pale skin and that we should all be happy with the skin tone we have. We've decided to support Nicola on her mission to see a new law make it illegal for under 18s to use sunbeds. Nicola says, "I think it's brilliant that heat are getting on board. Sunbeds are dangerous. There's no law at the moment about how old you have to be to use one - and there are unmanned salons all over the country, which means kids of 11 can go on them and just fry, which is wrong. The lengths that people go to to make themselves look better is unhealthy. It should be OK to just look the way we look. Find it within yourself to be happy with who you are - don't worry about what people think, and don't strive for perfection. Then you'll find that life is an easier place." You really don't need to use sunbeds to look gorgeous, they are dangerous and make you look old eventually! Spray tan is not just as good its better! NON orange, NON smelling,95% natural, paraben, chemical and alcohol free. I wish I could get this product through to the teens. www.sunshinepod.com, anyone know any teen sites...bebo maybe?

Firstly ajjordan should be applauded. I use sunbeds once a week and have read a lot about exposure to sunlight (and sunbeds) following all of the media attention focusing on the dangers of exposure to UV. I have come to the conclusion that as long as we each know our own skin type and its susceptability to burn and do not over expose our skin to high doses of UV then the benefits of UV exposure far outweigh the dangers. Since the new year the media has reported that exposure to UV reduces the likelihood of getting bowel cancer, rickets, MS and can increase levels of testosterone (male sex drive!) as well as making our bones stronger! I've also read that having a tan toughens (not dries) our skin and prevents us from absorbing too much of the harmful UV rays which burns our skin..... this makes sense, I use a sunbed a little more before I go on holiday and I never burn! Cancer Research even admit that exposure to UV has many health benefits and that we should just ensure we do not over expose our skin to UV and burn - surely any sensible person will avoid burning themselves. The manager at my local tanning centre is frustrated that the industry is not regulated and that irresponsible operators are allowing people under the age of 18 to tan without checking their specific skin type and hence allowing them to over-expose and burn. I didn't watch the Nicola Roberts documentary but I've been told that she was also saying not to use any fake tan either and just be natural! As I'm not aware of any potential risks of using fake tan why would she be saying this? Oh, because she's launching a new range of her own beauty products for those with pale complexions!! Come on everyone, wake up and smell the coffee!! This programme was a total PR campaign for her new line of beauty products!

i watched her documentary, and it really opened my eyes. i had no idea that tanning could have such severe consequences, and am proud to say that i cancelled my tanning appointment and am trying not to do it anymore, because the risks just aren't worth it... and good on nicola, she looks so much better now xx

I watched her documentary the other week and even the radio interview she did lots of people were saying that BBobsesser, that she isnt this white and is only doing this campaign to promote her make-up range. she was really offended but its clear she isnt that white going by her old pics, a bit of bronzer wouldnt go amiss, not saying she has 2 be brown but deathly pale caked-on stage make up is horrible.

I am so fed up with this "you have to be tanned attitude". I have nothing against faking it, but the way I see it I was born white and that's the way I shall stay. Skin colour shouldn't dictate fashion. (This isn't against any of you who like tanning, it's a matter of personal choice. I'm just fed up with the 'oh you can't go out looking that pale!' mentality.)
