Gisele Bundchen wants breastfeeding law

Brazilian supermodel Gisele Bundchen has reignited the always-thorny breastfeeding debate by claiming that the practice helped her regain her figure after giving birth, and that everyone should be forced to do it after having a baby.

“I think breastfeeding really helped,” she said. “Some people here think they don't have to breastfeed, and I think, ‘Are you going to give chemical food to your child, when they are so little?’”

Sigh. If there’s one thing the public like less than a six-foot, upsettingly attractive woman with a flawless post-baby body, it’s a six-foot, upsettingly attractive woman with a flawless post-baby body lecturing the public on how they should bring up their children. But Gisele has more to say.

“There should be a worldwide law, in my opinion, that mothers should breastfeed their babies for six months,” she said.

That’s right a law. Presumably it would be enforced by “lactation officers” who would randomly search prams for bottles to confiscate. Silly.

Whilst i agree breast is best for first six months, Its not always an option for a woman for many different reasons such as being on certain medications being a breast cancer survivor and having had a masectomy..some women dont produce milk.. theres lots of reasons, Its ignorant of gisele to say such a stupid thing

I love how celebs think their opinon matters. Im sure leaving her newborn all day with nanny's while she worked out with personal trainers had nothing to do with getting her figure back. I wonder if she does night feeds?/ :O

FYI rachbb I also had a caesarean and emergency 2nd surgery with intensive care following which my milk didn't come and had to give formula the first few days. I'm not getting my point across so I give up but all I was trying to say is I respect different choices, I just wish there was more proper support, that's all. You can all let rip again. i give up

I didn't breastfeed my 1st, did my 2nd. It's people like you 4methyx, make people feel like complete shit if they don't want to/can't breastfeed. Having a baby is hard enough without "outsiders" putting their 2p's worth into how your child is brought up. I think you're very ignorant to other peoples feelings to be honest, ultimately it has nothing to do with you. For the record, both my children are happy and very healthy - yes even the one who was brought up on "poison formula"! If you can breastfeed (and it is bloody hard), great. If you can't or choose not to, great too..happy mum = a happy baby. As for making this a law - good bloody luck with that one.

4methyx, you really need to stop with the preaching now. When your baby is put on drips and loses 2 lbs in weight because you were forced to have a ceasarean and your milk didnt come in, what do you do then??? this happened to my friend, she was absolutely gutted and its people like you who make things worse. Every woman is different!! And yeah, it may help with childhood illnesses and is beneficial for your child, but when it doesnt happen, it doesnt happen. My little girl who is 5 now was bottlefed from 4 weeks and theres nothing wrong with her and never has been. I can understand when women just dont wanna do it because they dont feel right or choose not to. Its their own bloody choice at the end of the day. Its their child, their life, not yours. Get over yourself.

She's right about what it does for the body - burns fat and helps contract the womb. And supplies the baby with a massive dose of vitamins which knock back the risks of cancers like childhood leukemia. Really clever actually. But to pontificate like that is frankly embarrassing

For gods sake chill out about breastfeeding, the pressure to do it is enormous and women are made to feel like they are harming their baby if they cannot do it. Contrary to blanket assertions that "most women can do it", this isn't always the case. I tried, had no supply, bottle fed, tried again, failed again (and yes I had breast counsellors involved before some smart arse tells me "it's all about technique) and almost had a bloody nervous breakdown about it due to feeling horribly guilty. In the end I fed my baby apatamil by bottle and she is a beautiful healthy 3 year old now with no health issues at all. Quit the preaching folks and get real!!

My milk supply was completely gone by the time my daughter was 4 months old. I agree, as much as you can, give your baby breastmilk, but dear god, everyone should quit it with this frickin lecturing. There are as many different reasons to why YES and why NOT as there are women in the world. Some can feed their babies till they are 7 years old and older (!), some try hard but struggle to last those 6 months, some are just a bit on the self-centred side, but pointing a finger at someone before you find out the reasoning is arrogant and ignorant. Good for Gisele. Lets hope its smooth sailing for her in other areas too! She's a supermodel...might as well be a supermom while she is at it.
