Same sex couples to feature on Strictly Come Dancing next year?

Strictly Come Dancing could be in for a bit of a twist next year, with the possibility that same sex couples could feature in the show for the first time!

The ballroom dancing show has fast become a global phenomenon, with celebrities from 30 around the world hot-footing it across the dancefloor with their professional partners. Up until now each show has followed the same format, but Ryan Seacrest broke the news to his openly gay radio show guest Portia DeGeneres yesterday that the strict Dancing With The Stars format was going to change next year, and that bosses were "planning to feature a same-sex couple."

" You’re at the top of the list!" he told Portia DeGeneres (formerly Portia De Rossi, and now married to chat show host Ellen DeGeneres). "Goodness, you really do break news," she replied, adding that she might even be up for doing the show, "I’m not gonna pass, let me think about it. I used to be a ballet dancer. It’s not completely a pass. You never know."

If TV moguls in the US are planning to feature a same sex couple on Dancing With The Stars, then you can bet your bottom dollar that the stateside export will have spoken to the show's original version of the worldwide hit, Strictly Come Dancing here in the UK, and that the show here will likely adapt to follow suit. And why not? It sounds like a great idea to us!

So, who would you like to see feature next year though? Louie Spence doing the tango with Brendan Cole? Sue Perkins dancing the light fandango with Ola Jordan, or perhaps Christopher Biggins in a waltz with Anton Du Beke?!

they well should let gay people dance with whoever they want to, its about bloody time. in the 1930s it would have been very bad to see a white women and a black man dancing together now thats normal so should being gay. bigotted people really piss me off

Well said Katita. The rules were only amended as the woman in Israel (it's not Russia clairey) wanted to show the Israeli people that being gay is normal and thought a prime time show would help to get this msg across, which seems fair enough, especially in such a religious country. Seems a bit odd that the US version are co-opting it though purely in a bid to court controversy for ratings and news stories.

There was a clip on Russle Howards Good News lastnight about Strictly in Russia about two women paired up together. Im not at all homeaphobic but if any of you saw that particular clip im sure you would agree that they couldnt dance that particular dance on our show with kids dancing, honestly, it was like something you would see in a lap dance culb, Brucie would have a heart attack lol

Honestly, I don't completely get why you would put a same-sex couple on a show like this. Almost all of those Strictly-type dances have a man and a women's part, and part of my thinks its wrong to treat gay people any differently than the straight contestants by pairing them with a same sex partner. Just because you're a gay man doesn't mean you can't or wouldn't want to do ballroom dancing with a woman!! But the other part of me thinks we need something like this to normalise homosexuality and its a great opportunity to celebrate a same-gender couple in a prime time slot... I just think if I was a lesbian, and I wanted to learn ballroom dancing, I'd rather be partnered with a bloke.

There's already a same sex couple on DWTS Israel. The woman they asked to be on the show said she would only go on it if she could dance with a woman as she didn't want to compromise her lifestyle choice. So DWTS US are just jumping on the bandwagon really, but good on them.
