Now there’s a headline you don’t see every day.
Despite the fact that a source told People magazine that Nicole Richie went for an old Hollywood vibe at her wedding, the reality TV star/socialite had an elephant at her wedding to Good Charlotte rocker Joel Madden. Well animal right's groups aren't happy about it.
The couple tied the knot this weekend at Lionel Richie’s lavish Beverley Hills mansion, and as well as inviting celebrity guests like Gwen Stefani and Samanthan Ronson (but not Paris Hilton), they also had an elephant at the do. Yes, we have no idea how an elephant fits in with the Hollywood glamour theme either, Bollywood maybe.
Today animal rights groups have responded to Nic’s decision to include an elephant in her big day (seriously, why did she want an elephant at her wedding? Oh wait, E! News tells us she’s been obsessed with elephants since childhood), and not surprisingly they’re none too pleased.
PETA, who’s work trying to stop Ringling Bros & Bailey Circus from abusing their elephants as actually supported by Nicole on twitter, took aim at Nicole and Joel, saying “We’re sure she didn’t know that Have Trunk Will Travel – the company that likely provided Tai the elephant, who was taken from the wild as a baby more than 40 years-ago – trains it’s elephants with bullhooks and electric shock prods. We’ll be writing to her privately (yes so privately you’re telling the world) to respectfully ask her to keep exotic animals off her guest lists for future celebrations.” Well, if she didn’t know, she sure does now, and we bet she feels lousy.
UK-based group The Captive Animal’s Protection Society, also added some angry comments, “If, as news reports state, Nicole Richie indeed really likes elephants, then the last thing she should do is force one of these majestic and sentient animals to perform for her amusement.”
Ok people, we want to know where you stand on this debate. Are these animal right’s groups just trying to ruin Nic’s big day, or do they have a valid point? You decide….
