Lady Gaga’s quickly taking over from Barbara Striesand and Judy Garland as the gay’s fave – just ask TOWIE’s Harry Derbridge – with her song, ‘Born This Way’ becoming an LGBT anthem. So it came as no surprise to see her shaking her groove thang at the annual EuroPride event which took place in Rome last night.
Rocking a bright turquoise wig and keeping it Italian in Versace, Gaga spoke out about gay rights on stage in the historic Circus Maximus arena. Although she’s no vagitarian, she did declare herself ‘a child of diversity’ and she boldly criticised governments all around Europe for their intolerant attitudes towards the gay community. Stefani Germanotta, as she is known to her friends, impressed the Roman audience by proclaiming her Italian roots and said, ‘Today we fight for freedom, we fight for justice. We beckon for compassion, understanding and above all we want full equality now’. Rousing words indeed – maybe one day we’ll have a President Gaga. We can but dream.
Of course, it wasn’t all politics and inspirational speeches. The queen of queens went on to do what she does best as she entertained the crowds with a rendition of ‘Born This Way’ as well as another track called ‘Edge Of Glory’ from her new album - the biggest selling of the year so far. Check out the (very long) vid above and pretend that you were there, dressed like a rhinestone covered cowboy, standing up for your beliefs too. Next year, you can join in the fun for real because EuroPride is coming to London. Let’s hope Gaga comes too.
