When we heard yesterday’s tragic news about the death of Amy Winehouse, our thoughts immediately went to her parents.
Both Mitch and Janis Winehouse were incredibly close to their daughter and did their best to support Amy through all her personal problems. We felt particularly distressed for Amy’s dad Mitch, who was actually on a flight to New York when Amy was found dead in her Camden flat.
Today, Mitch has spoken about his grief, telling the Sunday Mirror, "This isn't real. I'm completely devastated. I'm coming home. I have to be with Amy. I can't crack up for her sake. My family need me. I'm devastated, it's such a shock."
Amy’s mother Janis – who saw the troubled star the day before her death – has also spoken about her grief, admitting that the awful news hasn’t sunk in yet, “She seemed out if it but her passing so suddenly still hasn't hit me. Amy always said 'I love you mum' when we would say goodbye. They are the words I will always treasure. I'm glad I saw her when I did."
An official statement from the Winehouse family reads, "Our family has been left bereft by the loss of Amy, a wonderful daughter, sister, niece.
"She leaves a gaping hole in our lives. We are coming together to remember her and we would appreciate some privacy and space at this terrible time."
All of our thoughts go out to the Winehouse family and to anyone who was close to Amy at this very sad time.
