Sarah Michelle Gellar: “I totally have body dysmorphic disorder”

Sarah Michelle Gellar has admitted that like most women she struggled with body issues, and that she even “tunes out” when she looks in mirrors.

The Buffy The Vampire Slayer star told Health.com, "I'm a female! I totally have body dysmorphic disorder. I think most women do. A make-up artist friend once said, 'I don't think I've ever seen you look in a mirror.' I'm surrounded by them all the time - you sit in hair and make up - so I guess I just have this mechanism where I tune it out.”

The 34-year-old actress then continued, "So every once in a while, I'll look and I'll be like, 'Wait, that's what I look like?' I just have to remember that I'm human, and I'm a mum. Being a parent changes the vanity at least a little bit. It has to. Your priorities are different."

Unusual labour

Sarah Michelle, who also talked about how she likes to keep in shape, then revealed that she kept on exercising during her pregnancy, and even went into labour when she was doing Pilates,

“I went into labor at the Pilates gym. It was funny, because I was getting cranky, and I said to my trainer, "I’m just cranky today." She was like, "Maybe it’s because you’re going to give birth!" And I was like, "Nah, not yet." It turned out I was in labour, I didn’t realise.”

Wow, people are sensitive. I'm asthmatic. If someone came out and said 'ooh I was so breathless after that run I think I have asthma' I wouldn't take offence. Sometimes it's like people just want to be offended!

I do like her (or at least I did until about 2 minutes ago!) but thats a shocking thing to say. I was diagnosed with BDD at 15 years old and I'm not joking when I say it ruined my life. I used to think I was too ugly to leave the house and when i did go to school, I would have an actual panic attack if a teacher asked me a question and anyone in the class turned to look at me. I wouldnt even put my hair in a ponytail because I thought people would think "omg she actually took time to do her hair. Does she think thats gonna make her look better with a face as ugy as that!" If I got on a bus and it was full I used to feel really sorry for the person who had to sit beside me and I used to think they havent done anything wrong and they have to sit next to me, thats so unfair on them. And I used to eat lunch in the toilets because I was worried about putting the other students off their lunch if I went into the dining hall! Its a serious illness and people who belittle it make it so much worse for the people who genuinely struggle daily with it. End rant.

I particularly loathe when celebrities belittle disorders and illness like BDD (OCD and bi-polar are other favourites too). "Oh yeah, everyone's got 'em!" Yes, it's truly hilarious Sarah.
