They've only been seeing each other for seven months, but that - and the fact that he's still legally married to a certain Miss Katie Price - didn't stop Alex Reid from proposing to Chantelle Houghton last night. And where did this private moment of shared love and joy take place? A romantic restaurant? A remote hilltop? Nah, he did it on live TV over in Ireland.
The cage-fighting Reality star, who found fame during a doomed romance with Jordan, popped the question on Irish chat show The Saturday Night Show. The pair, who recently returned from romantic holiday in Florida where they posed for several hundred snuggly poolside pics, were talking about their plans to begin IVF when the host suggested to Alex that he make an honest woman of Chantelle.
After laughing and protesting that it "wouldn't be romantic", Alex turned to his giggling girlfriend and said, "I haven't got a ring, but you know what, I'm going to do it. Seriously, nobody tell anyone! Will you marry me?" After a lot more giggling and blushing, a delighted Chantelle accepted and the two of them had a lovely kiss to celebrate.
It's been a tough few years for both Chantelle and her new husband-to-be. He had to cope with the humilation and fall-out of an extremely high-profile break-up, while Chantelle had all that upset over Preston for the second time and was then told by doctors that her eating disorders may have left her unable to conceive naturally. When she found out the news, Chantelle had only been seeing Alex for a few weeks, but he's been incredibly supportive since the start and now the couple are willing to do whatever it takes to have a baby together.
We're the first to admit that when these two first appeared together in public we assumed it was all a bit of a showmance, but Alex and Chantelle have proved that they really do love each other. We wish them all the best (and suggest that Chantelle gets a bigger pink carriage than Katie Price did when she married Peter Andre).
And what of the former Mrs Reid and her view on the happy news? Well, she has yet to react to the news on Twitter, but last night she did post a message sating, "I'm just gonna enjoy being single and just go on dates woooo and stay away from relationships for once." We give her two weeks.
