Lily Allen’s anger at Jessie J’s MOBO success

Lily Allen doesn’t exactly keep her opinions to herself and her latest upset comes after Jessie J’s success at the MOBOs.

The Price Tag singer won in four of the five categories she was nominated for. She got gongs for Best Song (Do It Like A Dude), Best Album, Best Act and Best Newcomer. Nice work, Jessie!

But Lily Allen criticised the success, tweeting: “Now, I love Jessie J as much as the next person, but how is her music “of black origin”? Is it ‘cause she says “man dem” in her tune?”

Jessie J didn't expect to win

Here’s what Jessie J had to say for herself when accepting her Best Album award: “Wow. I did not expect to win at all. I just want to say the biggest thank-you to my fans because I watched this last year by myself in my living room and no-one knew who I was and now I just won the best album.” And breathe, Jessie! “That is epic. Thank-you.”

The 23 year-old also tweeted today: “I am so over whelmed and still on cloud 9 after Wednesday.”

Tinie Tempah won Best hip hop / grime act and Adele got Best R&B / Soul act. That’s all very well and good, but Boys II Men bagged Outstanding Contribution to Music and where would we be without them?

the point here is not that jessie j is white, its that she makes pop music. Note that Lily doesnt say anything about pro green or example or adele, this is because the make music of Black origin. Jessie J, makes pop music. Thus she shouldn't have recieved as many awards as she did if any. The general consensus on twitter was much the same. Acts more apt were overlooked in favour of her and it seems unfair.

Just to add, the creator of the MOBOs Kanya King is mixed-heritage, so I don't think there is any intention to exclude or deny 'white' artists any plaudits...she was just trying to celebrate music genres and artists, esp from the UK, who were being ignored by other award ceremonies. Lily Allen's comments are flawed and bitchy and she's exposed her nasty side again. Don't be fooled by Lily - her comments were designed only to harm and discredit. A bit pathetic really...

No, Lil, Jessie makes R&B and soul-influenced pop, which is the stuff the Mobo (Music of Black Origin) awards celebrates. The nominees themselves do not have to be from such an ethnic background but make music that his influenced by such a genre...hence Adele being a nominee and winner!...I wonder why she didn't complain about Adele?

yep, valid point made... JJ aint 'OBO'!! Plus i completely agree that in this day an age the mobos ought to be scrapped, they just would never allow a completly 'white artist' awards show so why is it allowed to go on?

It's a perfectly valid comment, which was made before the event happened, and MOBO - black origin - well us white people have no rhythm apparently so surely all music is MOBO? ! I agree that surely we are all 'integrated' now - you don't have the White Brits Awards, the Interacial Groups Awards etc, so in one respect why have the MOBOs, but hey ho - I don't think she was being bitchy, just asking what part WAS OBO (which I don't know, but hey I used to like Cliff Richard, Steps and S Club 7, so what do I know?!?!?!) xx

someone's bitter and jealous eh? hate people that can't stand to see other people's success so decide to belittle them. and how come she didn't moan that Adele won an award then? surely Jessie J is more R&B than Adele? It's great she won 4 awards, she deserved them, otherwise she wouldn't have got them.

One would assume there was equal rights but it appears that with the majority of music award ceremonies there is an apparent invisbility of categories that recognise and/or celebrate the efforts of musicions (of all ethnicities) that write and produce music of black origin, that is rnb, soul etc infleunced music. Hence the creation of the mobo awards. And wrightly so honeybee35 MOWO= Brit awards, NME awards.

I don't understand why they still do the Mobo award, I thought our country has equal rights now, so why give separate awards out for black origin?

This is a tricky one because I find the 'criteria' for the MOBO awards is all a bit muddy, so there will always be a bit of controversy. Initially, i think it was set up to promote genres/artists who would have never ever been nominated for say a BRIT award or received recognition elsewhere... Now, though, like most award shows the 'winners' are whoever will draw the most advertising revenue for the organisers. Jessie J was a predictable winner. (** p.s. MOWOs = the BRITs ?)
