Ricky Gervais apologises for

That very cheeky chap Ricky Gervais is in trouble over his use of a certain word in one of his latest rants. The comedian has previously used the word “mong” in his work, both on Twitter and in his stand-up shows.

Ricky, the creator of hit shows such as The Office and Extras (Some of our faves, we might add), at first defended his use of the word when other comedians and disability campaigners hit out at his comments.

Ricky is said to have been particularly moved when campaigner Nicola Clark, who is a mother to two disabled girls, spoke with Jeremy Vine on his BBC radio show about her distaste for the word as her daughters were subject to abuse by people on the street who would use such phrases.

Ricky reached out to the mother by tweeting 'a very public thankyou' for her 'kind, rational and understanding words in private'. Clark replied by tweeting, '

'I now understand that you didn't and wouldn't intentionally hurt anyone. Do you understand why people got upset by it?' Ricky responded,

'I do now. Never dreamed that idiots still use that word aimed at people with Down's Syndrome. Still find it hard to believe.'

Since being questioned on the subject Ricky has said that he felt “naive” to the situation. We know Ricky is used to offending with some of his darker stand-up material, but it’s nice to know he’ll stand up and apologise when it’s needed! What do you Heatworld Citizens think of it all?

If people are not meant to use the word mong then they should not be able to throw the word fit or eppi around like some people do because being an epileptic I find it just as offensive.

I think everyone needs to come into modern times..... lots of words are used today that once made reference to something/someone that it no longer does. People use words with no reference to its original meaning. If someone is saying Mong to a disabled person that is wrong, but saying it in a different context should not cause this outrage! Im sure he wasnt picturing a disabled person when he said it.

His programs were good but he basically plays the same character...In both The Office and Extras it was his co-stars that made it work.

I dont think repeatedly using the word mong can be characterised as a 'slip'.I think its extremely disappointing, he has a huge platform and audience and this is what he uses it for? To reclaim that word??!! Im also dubious that he didnt think it would have gotten such a strong reaction, good timing by him because it has gotten him huge publicity in the run up to his new show.
