Since this series of The X Factor started, we’ve learned that Gary Barlow can be quite catty. We know he can slag off a boyband – “Nu Vibe? More like no vibe!” - but we never knew he could be patronising – especially to royalty!
In this pretty awkward exchange with Price William, Kate Middleton, Prince Charles and Camilla, he says: “I hope you enjoy tonight, I hope it’s not too loud”.
Perhaps his comments were directed at Charles, who no doubt has extra-sensitive hearing. Or maybe he was reeling from not knowing whether to curtsey or bow to the royals. Or he was just nervous about singing at the Royal Albert Hall in front of such tall people.
Wills is quick on the ball, though, and barks down to the surprisingly titchy pop star: “The louder the bedder, Gary”. The official translation in the posh/normal speak dictionary tells us that he meant “better” and wasn’t actually flirting with the Take That star.
Though quieter than a dormouse with a sore throat, Kate got some attention, too, wearing a very short £70 Zara dress!
