Alex Reid doesn’t strike us as the sharpest tool in the box, so we're kind of impressed by his claim that on the first night he met fiancé Chantelle Houghton he told her he’d get her pregnant.
We’re not 100% sure how successful this chat-up line would work on the average woman - especially since the exact words were too naughty for the pair to repeat during their interview on ITV this morning. But it clearly worked on Chantelle.
The pair giggled when Alex told Daybreak presenters Dan Lobb and Kate Garraway: “I said something naughty the first night I met her…I said I was going to give her a baby.”
And Alex's wishes came true - the couple are now expecting their first child. Chantelle told of how she’s “lost all hope” of getting pregnant after suffering fertility problems.
She said: “My only route was to go through IVF. And we were literally about to start – we had the injections in the fridge – when obviously the time of the month didn’t appear for me and I ended up doing a test and I was pregnant. I could not believe it, I was in absolute shock.”
They also batted away criticism that the couple’s problems conceiving were “just part of the publicity”.
Alex said: “I can understand why people might say that, everyone’s critical of everything in the public eye, but we went through an awful time and it was a horrible time and that’s all that matters to us.”
We’d best believe Alex, because if his chat-up line claims are anything to go by, he’s something of a fortune- teller. And as all-knowing as we can be, that’s some pretty stiff competition to be up against.
