Jamie Lynn Spears: “I wasn't trying to glamorise teen pregnancy”

Britney Spears’ baby sister Jamie Lynn has been off the celebrity radar for some time now. She’s been quietly bringing up her daughter Maddie Brianne since giving birth in June 2008.

Now Jamie Lynn is taking her first steps back into the public eye, and she’s started by opening up about her teen pregnancy experience,

“It was 2007. I had been on a Nickelodeon show, Zoey 101, and after we wrapped shooting, I just wanted to go home to Louisiana and finish high school, be a cheerleader, all that. Then I found out I was pregnant,” the actress and singer tells Glamour magazine. “I was young. I was in love. I was like every other teenager, except I had this last name. And I made a decision that is forever my decision.

“Everybody is dealt a hand of cards. It was my choice to play them the way I played them. But the hateful comments hurt.”

“I wasn't trying to glamorize teen pregnancy”

Jamie, who has just turned 21, was subjected to accusations of being a poor role model for her young fans and of glamourising teen pregnancy. Claim she wholeheartedly refutes,

“Like many young girls, I was really scared to go to the doctor,” Jamie confesses. “I was on a Nickelodeon show, and it felt especially embarrassing to ask someone to put me on birth control… I did feel responsible for the young girls and the mothers who I probably confused and let down. I apologise for that. But I wasn't trying to glamorise teen pregnancy.”

Comeback

Now, Jamie is ready to return to the public eye, and after relocating to Nashville and working on her debut country album she’s looking to find fame for something other than being a teen mother,

“I was a kid who did a kid show. Then I went away and raised my child, and the world has never met me as an adult. This is the first time anybody is really meeting me as a grown woman and grown mother making a decision about what to do with my life.

“Do people have an idea of who they think I am? Yes, and that's fine with me. My music will speak for itself.”

What do you thinlk about Jamie's interview - are you surprised by her honesty?

i agree angel louie. it happened to me at the same age but i had a miscarriage. teens have sex every day and night of the week (and they sure as s$%t don't all use contraception) but some get away with and some don't, no matter how careful they are. i think it's cool that she is obviously a respectable young lady who has dealt with this whole in amazingly grown up way.

Debster i have been in that position, and Shneebly I don't think you should be so flippant about it, it can be a really traumatic thing. I was 17 and on the pill, and missed one. I took the morning after pill but was still pregnant. Im still with the dad 11 years later and have added 2 more to our family. Really fucks me off the way people treat teenage mums as idiots who have ruined their lives, its not always a case of irresponsibility, in fact its the complete opposite.

People are a bit free and easy with the abortion talk here, it's not birth control and shouldn't be used as such. I'm sure that unless you've ever been in the situation then you have no business saying what people should have done. Also, her sister is Britney Spears, I highly doubt she struggled financially. Jeez.

leax no one would have found out if she had an abortion. do you think that all these tweenies have had things like this happen and decided against not having the baby because of their career, age etc. the fact she had the baby really surprised me because she very very easily could have had it taken care of and no one would have being any the wiser.

I sort of admire her for having it out like this. Lets face it, she didn't exactly encourage teenage girls to get pregnant. They've been doing it on their own accord plenty before she went and did it...

Raised her child???? So her kid is 4 and she thinks she's raised it? Sorry but that is neither mature or confident. And as dreester commented, what did she think would happen if she had unprotected sex... Yes abortion is a very personal issue, but I don't think it's something people should dismiss either, it's a perfectly viable option. I agree with shneebly about the "not believing in abortion" thing though, it's absolutely ridiculous.

Of course i think an abortion is acceptable.. people say they dont believe in it, its not a myth! If i dont have a solid relationship and a secure income and living in a good environment then i would definitely think of it as a viable option.. when it comes to bringing a person into the world, whether you believe in it or not you have to consider what you're bringing the child into and if its not ideal then abortion is a good option. This is why we have scratters all over this country popping out a million kids by the time they're 19 because they 'dont believe' in abortion. fortunately for her shes rich soooo its covered

Shneebly that's such a stupid thing to say. Abortion isn't for everyone, its a massive, personal decision. Having unprotected sex is silly, but its in no way confined to teenagers, I know a fair few twenty-somethings who have had accidents. She faced up to her situation and has done it with dignity. Fair play to her.
